RE: CRUSHED

The e-mail reply had a sad undertone, but hopeful. I had been in pursuit of ideas that would help instill motivation for recycling and inquired about a can crusher prototype I had seen in a design competition and thought to be sold through Japan’s Seibu department stores. The designer, Arari Kashiwamura, said his product is not in production or sold anywhere and he had only one himself. In his well-crafted English he went on to convey his hope for its future.

Maybe its time has come. With a timeless design, reminiscent of the Airstream trailer, multi-functionality — a simple device to build biceps, relieve stress and, most importantly, to promote recycling. One only has to conduct a quick search to see there’s not much out there that makes recycling less than a chore.

Ready to help push it to market?

    Hi
I like the look of this can crusher. I am looking at potentially introducing can crushers in the UK for aluminium and steel cans. Do you know if this model is in production now at all?
    thanks

This prototype is not in production and I have not seen anything else like it. The product designer indicated it was produced for a store in Japan, but never made it to market. It was featured in ID Magazine competition back in the early 90s. Let us know how your pursuit goes — we always support great design.
