how cool is that.
I recently visited the Coca-Cola museum in Atlanta. Coke has had fun with its brand for decades and it shows at the museum. They have a room full of pop art (literally) inspired by Coca-Cola, a working bottling factory, a great animated film about a coins journey through a vending machine, fun commercials from when we were kid to now, and lots of great memorabilia. In one of my favorite rooms you can taste sodas from around the world - black current, mango, and some funny things that were a mystery to me. There were lots of happy people trying all kinds of sodas, and lots of cups… Cups made from corn. HOW COOL IS THAT. I have heard of corn based plastics and have seen samples but have never seen this material in commercial use. The sodas were really fun to try. The biodegradable cups, a cool bonus.
It was worth checking out.

Corn plastics are exciting!!
The Cafeteria at Stanford’s GSB is working toward a “zero-waste Stanford”. All of their cutlery, serving trays, napkins, and most of their food containers are compostable!
On the salad bar they have a poster that describes how the compostable plastics work. They have signs on all the food displays and cases that say things like “all of the packaging in this area is compostable, except for the yogurt cups”.
I really appreciate companies who do this since using biomass plastics and paper products significantly increase disposable costs for the restaurant. I have photos of the garbage areas: they have TWO compost bins, a recycle bin, and one trash can. They have signs above each bin that say what goes where like “Compost: All the cafeteria utensils and packaging as well as food waste go here” then over the trash “everything you can’t compost or recycle” (hardly anything).
Very impressive!
