breaking with tradition

As of Oct. 10th the internationally acclaimed band Radiohead has made its new album "Rainbows" available for download to fans for whatever the purchaser thinks its worth. Risky, maybe, but it is getting noticed. This UK buzz is spreading worldwide. They have broken tradition and are selling direct to their fans for a minimum service fee of 45p (approximately $1 US) on up. It is up to you. The band has chosen to take control of their own experience. While the record companies battle for copyright control, and download encryption rages on, it is nice to see a fan focused approach. Loyalty is earned, and this maverick move increased mine by just a bit.

FYI. There isn’t a minimum unless you put in more than £0.00. If you put in £0.00 you bypass all the credit card service fees. The album is great, by the way.

I think this is a great idea. I was going to purchase it this morning before work, but was a little put off by having to register to use their secure billing site. Although I’ll probably buy it this weekend. I’ve had people offer it to me for free, but I really want to buy it myself and give a little love back to a great band.
